Young Carers - HWIE HUB

Contents

A young carer is a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person. They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

'A young carer becomes vulnerable when their caring roles risks impacting upon their emotional or physical wellbeing and their prospects in education and life' (Care Act Statutory Guidance, 2014).

It is likely that there will be many young carers at every school.

You can find a wealth of further information and guidance within the Plymouth Young Carers Support Hub including

Young Carers school survey

A Plymouth City Council survey (November 2020) indicated that there are over 907 Young Carers within Plymouth schools. However this figure may be lower than the actual number due to awareness levels and identification challenges.

Here is a breakdown of the data (98% of Plymouth schools responded to the survey in 2020):

  • Key Stage One - 92
  • Key Stage Two - 339
  • Key Stage Three - 217
  • Key Stage Four - 192
  • Key Stage Five - 67

Young Carers in Schools programme

Young Carers in Schools is a free initiative that makes it as easy as possible for schools to support Young Carers.

Run jointly by Carers Trust and The Children's Society, the Young Carers in Schools (YCIS) programme works with schools across England to share good practice, provide relevant tools and training, and to celebrate the great outcomes that many schools achieve for young carers.

Due to the increased pressures of COVID-19, now is a crucial time to be implementing support for young carers in school.

Further information about the award can be found on the Young Carers in Schools website.
