We want children to be happy at school and to achieve high standards. We try to create an atmosphere in which learning is enjoyable, effective and matched to the ability of the child.

At St Peter's School, we aim to create within a Christian setting safe, secure and fun learning environment where every child feels happy and enjoys their learning experience.

We pride ourselves on creating an atmosphere where standards of teaching and learning are constantly in view and where all succeed to the best of their ability through knowledge of the individual.

We aim to make everyone feel valued as a member of the school community and that they have an important contribution to make to it. 1.      How does our school know if children need extra help?

We monitor the progress of all pupils carefully using a range of assessments. We hold progress meetings each term to discuss the progress of individual children. If a child is not making progress, we talk about what extra help we can give them. Sometimes concerns are raised by parents, outside agencies or the child them self.

2.      How accessible is the school?

St Peter's has level, or ramped, access to all classrooms as well as a shower room and a toilet suitable for wheelchair access. We are happy to discuss individual access requirements. Please contact the school office to arrange an appointment.

3.      Where can I find information about the school's approach to pupils with SEN?

These are our key principles:

  • At St Peter's we believe that educational inclusion means that staff, children and parents should value each other, respecting differences where they exist. This is within a Christian educational context in which we welcome all families and children of all faiths and none.
  • We are committed to removing barriers to accessing learning, the curriculum, the school's physical environment and all other aspects of school life, to ensure inclusion for all pupils.
  • We work closely with agencies across education, health, social care and voluntary bodies in order to best support inclusive practice.
  • We have a commitment not to exclude children to home, except in the most extreme circumstances, and to keep children within school with access to the curriculum through collaboration with the Plymouth Excellence Cluster.
  • We do not condone actions that belittle, humiliate or harass members of the school community.

4.      Who are the people responsible for children with SEN?

Class teachers are responsible for the day to day teaching of children with SEN in their class. The Head Teacher has overall responsibility for the learning, care and safety of all the pupils. The staff work as a team to ensure that pupils' needs are met.

5.      How do I contact the people responsible for SEN or arrange to meet them?

If you feel your child may need additional support with their learning, please speak to your child's class teacher. Alternatively, contact the school office and they can arrange an appointment to see the SEN Co-ordinator.

6.      What training or specialist expertise do your staff have around SEN?

Staff training is an important part of our continuing professional development. Our SENCo has completed the 'SENCo as Subject Leader' course, and regularly attends SEN conferences to keep up to date with current issues. There is a planned programme of training for staff which includes training related to SEN. Recent training has included: Positive Behaviour, and Trauma Informed Schools Training is tailored to match the needs of the children in school, and to help staff identify those with additional needs.

7.      What support can the school provide for children with SEN?

  • We plan for a range of teaching strategies to meet pupil's differing learning styles.
  • We emphasise the importance of collaborative learning so that pupils appreciate the value of working together.
  • Teacher's planning shows differentiation to meet the needs of the children in the class.
  • We seek to teach about other cultural traditions sensitively and include opportunities to challenge stereotypes and build pupil awareness across the curriculum.
  • We deal with issues such as bullying, rights and responsibilities and diversity as part of the PSHE curriculum.
  • We have a learning mentor and speech and language therapist who all come to work with the children in school.

At St Peter's CE Primary, we aim to promote inclusion and children with special educational needs are taught within the mixed ability classes. The exceptions to this are intervention initiatives. On these occasions, small groups and individuals may be withdrawn from their classes for short periods.

Children with Education, Health and Care plans, or interim support with a named Teaching Assistant, will be taught in small groups within the class.

8.      What further external support can the school access and when would this happen?

We work together with other professionals from education, health and social care, to provide a coordinated approach for children with SEN.

The school is able to refer to a range of other agencies for advice and support. These include: School Nurse; Speech and Language Service; Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service; Early Years ACCESS Panel; Communication Interaction Team; Psychology Service; and others.

We have access to a Multi-Agency Support Team (MAST) for additional help.

We would refer to an outside agency if a child was not making expected progress despite intervention within school, and following discussion with parents/carers.

9.      Who can I contact to provide additional advice and support my family?

Additional advice and support can be obtained from Plymouth Information Advice and Support for SEND (PIASS).

10.  How are parents/carers of children with SEN supported to share their views and concerns and work alongside the school?

We want to work together in the best interests of the children, so parents/carers are always involved in discussions and decisions about all aspects of SEN relating to your child. Class teachers will share Individual Education Plans with parents and discuss ways in which children can be supported at home.

11.   If I am not happy with the provision at the school, how can I share my concerns or make a complaint?

If parents/carers have concerns about their child's SEN provision, they should follow the school's complaints procedure (see school website). This involves first seeing the class teacher to try and resolve the issue. If this is not successful, see the school office to arrange an appointment with the Special Needs Coordinator who can advise about next steps.

The Local Authority has published a Local Offer explaining the provision available for children and young people with SEN in Plymouth.
