What is Emotionally School-Based Avoidance?

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is a broad umbrella term used to describe a group of children and young people who have severe difficulty in attending school due to emotional factors, often resulting in prolonged absences from school.

The impact of EBSA on children is far-reaching, it has been linked to seriously hampering children's psychological, social, and academic performance and subsequently performance in exams and employment opportunities.

ESBA guidance resources 

The following guidance has been produced by Plymouth's Educational Psychology service for Schools, Parents, Children and Young people. Guidance is based on the current evidence base of the factors which are associated with positive outcomes, including intervening early, working with parents and supporting and adapting the school environment.

What does the training involve?

The Educational Psychology service are able to hold training and consultation events for school staff and other professionals to supplement this guidance.
